In Brett We Trust

Last night I went to church to hear the preaching of northern California singer songwriter Brett Dennen. Hushed and reverent, Brett's fans lined the pews and filled the balcony to hear his sweet brand of pop folk. Launching his tour in support of the new album, "Smoke and Mirrors", the lanky red head had his fans enraptured throughout the set.

In a city known for its legendary music venues, the Central Presbyterian Church on 8th Street is a secret among the music illuminati. Arguably, the acoustics at Central Presbyterian are the best in town and perfectly suited for an act like Dennen. His band's warm, dampened tones echoed softly throughout the space and at moments kicked into revival mode for tunes like the set closer, "Sydney".

Compared to everyone from John Denver to Paul Simon, the young quirky Dennen is still carving his own identity, but based on the adoration from this sold out crowd he would seem to be on the path of musical righteousness.
